tetra-methyl-ortho-silicate-coupsyl-tmos

Tetra methyl ortho silicate (TMOS) is a colorless, flammable, and highly toxic liquid from the alkoxy silane family. It has low viscosity, a pungent odor, and hydrolyzes with moisture to produce SiO₂ and methanol. As a silane coupling agent, it dissolves in alcohols and common solvents and is the main, most widely used, and least expensive compound in the silane family, applied across many industries.

What is Tetramethyl Orthosilicate (TMS® COUPSYL) and what are its main properties?

Tetramethyl Orthosilicate (also known as methyl silicate) is a colorless, flammable liquid with a sharp odor, low viscosity, and moderate boiling point of 121 °C. It is toxic and soluble in alcohols and most common solvents. Upon contact with moisture, it undergoes hydrolysis and decomposition. Its density is 1.03 g/cm³, and it contains approximately 39.5 wt.% SiO₂.

TMS® COUPSYL is used in a variety of applications, including:

  1. Production of silica aerogels and silica foams

  2. Solvent for resins and silicone adhesives

  3. Sol–gel production

  4. Pure SiO₂ powder production

  5. Silica-based coatings and aerosils

  6. Coupling agent in composites and polymers

  7. Zinc-rich silicate primer binder

  8. Heat-resistant coatings

  9. Anti-corrosion coatings

  • Store in the original sealed container in a dry, low-light environment at 15–40 °C to prevent evaporation and hydrolysis.

  • Avoid contact with skin; wash immediately with water if contact occurs.

  • In case of ingestion, seek medical attention.

  • Keep away from flames, sparks, and heat sources, as the product is flammable and its vapors are toxic.

  • The product can be stored in plastic or metal containers, typically in 20 kg or 200 kg drums, but must remain sealed to prevent moisture absorption.
