Tetra methyl ortho silicate, also known as tetra methoxy silane, is a member of the alkoxy silane family and is a component of organosilicon. It is a flammable, colorless liquid with a medium boiling point and low viscosity. It also has a pungent odor and is very toxic. Tetra methoxy silane, which is the smallest member of the alkoxy silane family, has four methoxy groups . As a silane coupling  agent dissolves in alcohols and most common solvents and is hydrolyzed in contact with moisture to form SiO2 powder and methanol alcohol.

Tetra methyl ortho silicate is the main and cheapest substance in the silane family. It is the most widely used chemical in this family And is used in most different industries.
